Have a bike you no longer use? Consider donating it this month.
Volunteers with Rockville Bike Hub will refurbish donated bikes before they are distributed to children and adults through the county’s Bike Match program and Rockville’s Terrific Kids program.
Montgomery County residents will have an opportunity to donate used bicycles this month as part of an annual drive aimed at providing affordable and environmentally friendly transportation to people in the community.
The Montgomery County Department of Transportation will collect bicycles from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 16 outside the Montgomery County Council Office Building garage at the corner of East Jefferson and Monroe streets in Rockville.
The collection will take place rain or shine.
Bicycles should be in good working condition or need only minor repairs.
Volunteers with Rockville Bike Hub will refurbish donated bikes before they are distributed to children and adults through the county’s Bike Match program and Rockville’s Terrific Kids program.
Some bicycles also will be collected by Bikes for the World and sent to communities outside the United States. Bikes that cannot be repaired or reused will be recycled.
The Bike Match program has distributed bicycles to more than 1,000 Montgomery County residents since it began in June 2020, according to MCDOT Director Chris Conklin.
But demand remains high, with about 450 people currently on the program’s waiting list.
“We are hoping to be able to collect enough bikes to fulfill these requests,” Conklin said.
Residents also can organize bicycle collections at schools, places of worship or in their neighborhoods and bring the bikes to the Oct. 16 event in Rockville.
